Edward Hopper in Cologne
Edward Hopper is famous for his postcards, calendars and posters. Maybe this is why so many people crowd to see the Edward Hopper retrospective currently at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Some of Hopper’s paintings such as “Nighthawks” (1942) and “Automat” (1927) have become icons of 20th century art. This is perhaps one of the greatest honours that can be conferred upon an artist, but the omnipresence of his work as reproductions also makes it difficult to approach the original paintings with an open mind. There is the one with the woman sitting on the bed and there is that office scene.
