A Tribute to the Imagination

01.02.2009

I was blown away by these stunning intricately cut and folded hairpieces for the Chanel Couture Spring 2009 show.

They were created over a period of three weeks by Japanese hair stylist Katsuya Kamo and a small team of assistants from 2 packs of plain white 11x17 copier paper, or so I read somewhere. I assume they used black paper for the black pieces. I’d like to see them exhibited somewhere.

Turns out I’d been a fan of his work for some time, without knowing his name. He has for a long time collaborated with Junya Watanabe and has done the hair and make-up for numerous fashion magazine editorials.

Over at Dior, when asked what he thought about the recession, John Galliano, replied that "there is a credit crunch, not a creative crunch" and that "it’s our job to make people dream, and to provide the value in quality, cut, and imagination." How very true. I'll try and remember the one of it being the artist's job to make the audience dream, although I'd add think and reflect.
