Daniel Yergin: The Prize. The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power
I know that I'm late to the party, but this is an excellent book and required reading if you want to understand 20th and 21st century history.
David Hockney and his iPhone Paintings
The New York Review of Books of October 22, 2009 has a feature length article on David Hockney's iPhone Passion as well as an audio slideshow in which the author, Lawrence Weschler, discusses the drawings that David Hockney has been making with the Brushes application on his iPhone. The results are quite nice.
However, I should like to point out that there are other people doing stuff with either Brushes or some other iPhone application. I mean, this guy is great. Or have a look at this Flickr pool.
The real challenge is to create something that could only have been created using an iPhone. I mean, it's great that you can draw on your iPhone, but you can also draw with a pencil or charcoal. What you can't do with a pencil is paint. Actually it took awhile for painters not to use paint to color in their drawings but to actually use the material quality of the brush and the paint. So what is it that you can do with an iPhone but cannot do with a camera etc.? Maybe it's time I get one to find out...
