Daniel Yergin: The Prize. The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power
I know that I'm late to the party, but this is an excellent book and required reading if you want to understand 20th and 21st century history.
The Best Albums of 2009
My favourite albums of the year.
1. The XX: XX
2. Fever Ray: Fever Ray
3. Kronos Quartet: Floodplain
4. Tom Waits: Glitter and Doom Live
5. Fuck Buttons: Tarot Sport
6. Patrick Watson: Wooden Arms
7. Mi Ami: Watersports
8. White Denim: Fits
The XX and Fever Ray are really the stand-out albums of the year. The live album by Tom Waits is one that I expect to be listening to for years to come. The album by Kronos Quartet is hard to classify. It's not exactly classical, so I've included it here as well. I don't listen to Mi Ami and Sun O))) that often, but I used them in the studio during rehearsals.
I tried listening to the latest albums by Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion and The Flaming Lips: Embryonic, both of which were critically acclaimed, but I just don't like the sound.
