Inside Donald Judd's Library

09.05.2010

Donald Judd was a big book lover. Wherever he went, if he stumbled upon an interesting book, he would buy it and send it to his home in Marfa, Texas.

The Donald Judd Foundation has now created an online version of his immense library. You can wander through the library by clicking on a floor plan that connects to photographs of the bookshelves. The books are arranged in the order Judd arranged them.

There are 13,004 books in the library of which 3,129 are art books. The library offers an intriguing glimpse into Judd's universe. Show me a man's (or a woman's) library and I'll tell you who he (or she) is. Apart from art, there are books on science, philosophy and cultural theory, but as far as I can tell no crime, science fiction and mystery novels.

The library does not lend, but by clicking on a book's spine you can view the book's Library of Congress details. There's also a link to the book's WorldCat listing, through which you can search for a library (or shop) that has the book in stock.
