Daniel Yergin: The Prize. The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power
I know that I'm late to the party, but this is an excellent book and required reading if you want to understand 20th and 21st century history.
The 50 Greatest Samples In Hip-Hop
Kon and Amir Present The 50 Greatest Samples In Hip-Hop History. OK, so this is another one of those lists. But it is a good one. This is what the internet is for. I mean 20 years ago a magazine might have listed a top 10 and you just had to take it for granted. Now you can listen to the samples AND a song that sampled it straight away.
I must say that I had never heard of Kon and Amir, but thanks to this list I discovered some great new old music. All this 60s and 70s James Brown and Isaac Hayes stuff is a hiatus in my musical education. And I only knew Kool and the Gang from their 80s disco period, not from the 60s and 70s when they were doing really cool funk.
If you like this you may also like Protected: Massive Samples. A compilation of songs sampled by Massive Attack such as this one and this one.
And this is Eddie Murphy doing an impersonation of James Brown.
