Onion prices in India soared after heavy, unseasonal rains in the onion-growing regions of Maharashtra and Gujarat damaged crops. As an emergency measure the Indian government has temporarily banned onion exports. The government has also taken the unusual step of importing onions from neighbouring Pakistan. Onions are an essential ingredient of many Indian curries and are often served as an accompaniment alongside a main order or as part of a salad.

When I was in India in 2007 I was surprised to see so many onion traders. The photos were taken in Jodhpur, Jaipur and Delhi. By the way, it seems like onion salesmen sell potatoes, onions and garlic.
