Las Vegas

Las Vegas is rapidly becoming one of the world's culinary capitals. Top chefs from around the world are opening restaurants in Las Vegas, from Alain Ducasse to Thomas Keller and Guy Savoy. You can find a L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand and a Nobu at the Hard Rock Hotel, of all places.

It still strikes me as odd, since all food has to be flown in. I mean, eating fresh fish in the middle of the desert.

On weekdays it's pretty easy to get a table, but there's not much of a buzz. And without a buzz the sumptuous decor at Alex, Alain Ducasse, Picasso etc. falls flat. So, if you want to see and be seen, you should go on a Friday or Saturday and book well in advance. If it's the food that you're interested in, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

You don't have to spend a fortune to have a great breakfast, lunch or dinner in Las Vegas. The buffet is a Las Vegas institution. I tried the buffet, both for lunch and dinner, at the Bellagio and the Wynn, and the latter is my favourite. Excellent bread rolls, great desserts and more choice than you can try in one visit.
