2006

Massive Attack: Live with me directed by Jonathan Glazer.

OK Go: Here it goes again. Definitely one of my favourite videos of the year.

Nouvelle Vague: Dance With Me. More dancing. Especially the last few seconds are nice, but I think a compilation of the rehearsal footage would have been more fun and more "real".

12 Stone Toddler: The Rabbit (directed by Phil Sansom). More great dancing. Damn, this song/video rocks and swings! Think the opening scene of Mulholland Drive meets Donnie Darko.

Thom Yorke: Harrowdown Hill (QuickTime 24Mb). Quite brilliant. If you like the aerial footage that looks like a toy world you'll like the photography of Olivo Barbieri.

Primal Scream: Country Girl (QuickTime 42.5Mb). A blond tart, drugs and booze. Jonas Akerlund directs.

David Walters: Awa (QuickTime 25Mb). How is this going to end? Just watch it. Great docu style video.

Flowered Up: Weekender a wonderful epic 13 minute video directed by WIZ. "Dedicated to sufferers of Saturday night fever everywhere. May we never be cured." Watch it. Great song as well by the way. It's actually from 1992 (!) I believe, but it still fresh and it sure brings back some memories.

Broken Social Scene: Almost Crimes. Simple but stylish.

Johan: Oceans. A road movie about a girl from a small town in Argentina who travels to Holland to see a concert by Dutch band Johan. The video was directed by Johan Kramer of Dutch advertising agency KesselsKramer. There was quite a bit of debate when the video came out as to whether it is real or not (whether she filmed it herself or not, whether she really exists etc.). I didn't for a moment think it's real and I don't really care whether it is or not. It's a nice IDEA.

Zero 7: Throw it all away (QuickTime 6.6Mb). Directed by Matt Lenski and Click 3x and shot entirely with digital cameras. The 8000 or so images were then made into the video.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Tell me Baby. I enjoyed watching it, because it makes me feel like doing something silly as well.

Emilie Simon: Fleur de Saison. If you like videos such as Pagan Poetry by Bjork you'll like this one.

Death Cab for Cutie: What Sarah Said. Another great video directed by Laurent Briet.

The Raconteurs: Steady as you go (QuickTime 24.6Mb). I love this gritty video directed by Jim Jarmusch. It's a nice song as well.

The Horrors: Sheena Is A Parasite, directed by Chris Cunningham.

Quio: So Dazed (QuickTime 6.5Mb), I quite liked it, especially the moment when she realizes that there's something odd going on and sets out to explore.

Depeche Mode: Suffer Well directed by Anton Corbijn. I like the moment when he tries to cross the road to get to Heaven and is nearly driven over by a car.

Beck Hell: Yes features Sony's dancing humanoid robots.

Kashmir: The Curse of being a Girl. Put two nice looking girls into the cart of a rollercoaster. Put a camera in front and you've got a music video. It's that simple.

The Cardigans: I need some fine wine. Didn’t like it at first, but when I saw it again I thought it was quite stylish and well-made. I particularly like the interludes and now want to do a video filmed from above as well.

Stephen Malkmus: Baby C'mon. Whoever directed this video must have seen the commercials Francois Vogel did for Hewlett Packard, but I like the moment when there's wool coming from the tap.

Bright Eyes: At the bottom of everything. Directed by Cat Solen. Nice idea for a music video, there aren't that many with a sad ending.

Smog: Rock Bottom Riser is all nicely animated watercolours.

Plan B: No Good. If you like stop motion animation do check it out.

The Knife: You Take My Breath Away (QuickTime 14.9Mb). More animation, featuring dancing and playbacking skeletons this time.

Gorillaz: Dare. More animation.

Mlle caro and Frank Garcia: Far Away (dir. Sarah Chatfield). Abstract and sensual. Nice body by the way.

Bumcello: Death in Breast (QuickTime 49Mb), directed by Jerome Derathé. Another documentary style video, which somewhere half-way suddenly gets more serious. I did a search for Jerome Derathé and also found this video Alex Yet: Solid Water (QuickTime 70Mb). It made me want to make videos again myself. I still have a lot of unused footage here, but I've forgotten all about FinalCut Pro again.

Custom Kings: Number One. Shows a man preparing for a medieval fest, dressing up like a knight etc. Not a favourite, really, but fun to watch once for the glimpse it offers of a world quite alien to mine.

Primal Scream: Country Girl
