2007
Justice: D.A.N.C.E.. Original and fun.
RJD2: Work It Out (QuickTime 26Mb) featuring the amazing Bill Shannon. This video fills me with joy and happiness. Dance is the ultimate expression of freedom and joy. Another thing that I like about this video is that his performance is "real". Of course the presence of a camera always distorts and they may have done several takes, but still, the people, cars and busses passing by are real.
Cornelius: Like a Rolling Stone. A quite extraordinary video indeed. Yes, they are still being made.
Bat for Lashes: What's a Girl to Do. Simple concept, yet almost magical.
Efterklang: Illuminant. Weird, freaky video directed by Tobias Stretch who definitely stretched his imagination for this one (sorry...). Watch it in its entirety at least once.
Vitalic: Birds (QuickTime 11Mb). Directors Pleix didn't go for the obvious with this video. I love it.
Blonde Redhead: Top Ranking. One pose per second. Mike Mills directs.
The Rapture: Whoo! Alright Yeah...Uh Huh. Also love this mix of animation and video footage shot around Brooklyn.
MIA: Boys. A splash of colour.
Emily Haines: Doctor Blind was shot in a big hypermarket. Also like the "domino".
CSS: Alala. The concept behind this video is quite interesting, a fight at a party. By the way, a friend of mine also had a cat with two different coloured eyes.
Justice vs. Simian: We Are Your Friends won an MTV Europe Music Video Award. The idea is nice.
Xiu Xiu: Boy Soprano. Computer games killed the music video star.
Lyapis Trubetskoy: Kapital / Capital. A Russian video.
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness: The Owl directed by Emmanuel Ho. Music videos are rarely as dark as this. The Owl is the title of the track.
Simian Mobile Disco: Hustler is pretty cool and again Hustler is the title of the track.
GAM: Melodies. What to think of this video? I don't think it's intended as a parody.
Fiona Apple: Fast as you can directed by Paul Thomas Anderson is quite nice, so is she, not too sure about the song though.
The Sick Puppies: Free Hugs campaign. Don't know whether it's a music video, but I liked the idea when I first saw it. Then it became a hype.
Beck: Cell Phone's Dead is a new video directed by Michel Gondry.
Sao Paris: Sambaleias (dir. Benjamin Gibeaux) a cute, intriguing and beautiful animated video.
J Dilla: Nothing Like This (QuickTime 12Mb). I love the surreal logic of animation movies.
Múm: They Made Frogs Smoke Til They Exploded. Talking of great animation.
Bonde Do Role: Solta O Frango. A bit of raw energy from the streets of Brazil.
Dizzee Rascal: Sirens. Directed by WIZ.
Liars: Plaster Casts Of Everything. Reminded me of Lost Highway.
Big Face: I Wanna Be A Style Crusader.
The Bees: Listening Man. I know that feeling.
Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton: Our Hell. This one's quite beautiful. Entirely in negative.
Ludacris: Slap. Hip-hop as a form of cultural critique.
Kanye West (feat. Zach Galifianakis & Will Oldham): Can't Tell Me Nothing. Hilarious parody of the average über macho rap video.
Grizzly Bear: Knife is one of the weirder videos of 2007.

In music, dance, theatre and cinema creating a beginning or an end is more difficult than composing the middle part, because, as in chess, the number of possibilities is limited. Just listen to the final seconds of a random selection of songs on your iPod.
