Building: Casa da Musica
Location: Porto
Architect: OMA/Rem Koolhaas
Year of completion: 2005
Comments: An absolutely stunning building. From some of the surrounding slums it looks like a UFO has landed on the nearby Praça de Mousinho de Albuquerque. Inside the building is rich in details, from roof windows to a tiny hole in a wall revealing the workings of one of the elevators. It is also full of Rem Koolhaas' signature slightly subversive humour. The windows of the dressing rooms look out on the square, but from the outside you can also look inside. The VIP box contains the worst seats in the house and the roof is something you have to see for yourself. The building also takes a political stand. There are windows on all sides and some look out on parts of Porto whose existence some visitors may prefer to ignore.
