Comments: To really appreciate the Hagia Sophia you may need to be an architect. It is a miracle of engineering, even more so when you realize that it was built between 532 and 537 AD. The first dome was even bigger, but it was destroyed by an earthquake in 559. The interior dome is currently being renovated in preparation for Istanbul's designation as European Capital of Culture in 2010.
