Comments: Beyoglu is an area of contrasts, there are some luxurious hotels, a major shopping street, Istiklal Caddesi and some trendy restaurants, but if you go to the other side of Tarlabasi Caddesi, a main through road, it's another world. There you'll find one of Istanbul's poorer neighbourhoods. There's a real community atmosphere. I enjoyed chatting in broken English/Turkish with quite a lot of people.
