Just before I left for Tokyo I discovered two guide books by Momoyo Kaijima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto of Atelier Bow Wow, "Pet Architecture Guide Book" and "Made in Tokyo". The first is about the tiny buildings that you can find all over Tokyo on street corners and in-between other buildings. The other is about the kind of hybrid structures that appear typical to Tokyo, a supermarket with a driving school on the roof, a tunnel underneath a graveyard, a public bath sauna coin laundry convenience store apartment building. If you're into urbanism these are absolute must-buys. For me they were eye openers and just the kind of books I was looking for. On my walks through Tokyo I found various examples of pet architecture not included in their book. And I must say, those ultra small houses and buildings are fascinating indeed. I also happened upon the house in the last photo with a pipeline going through!!! I also loved the laundry, which was little more than a bunch of washers and a roof.
