Comments: Shenzhen lies just across the border from Hong Kong. In 1980 Shenzhen was the first city in China to become a 'special economic zone". It is now of the world's largest manufacturing centers and home to some 12 million people. Many European and American companies have transferred their production to Shenzhen or neighbouring Guangzhou. The iPod to name but one example is "designed in California" and made in Shenzhen.
