Building: Vitra Fire Station
Location: Weil am Rhein, Germany
Architect: Zaha Hadid
Year of completion: 1993
Comments: This is a legendary building, the first major building by Zaha Hadid to be completed. It is an astonishing building. The "problem" is that it no longer serves the function it was designed for, a fire station. The building is now its own museum and visitors get to admire how Zaha Hadid sought an innovative solution to every aspect of the original design brief. The space where the fire engines used to be now serves as an exhibition space for some of the chairs in the Vitra collection. Beware that you can only visit the building as part of the architectural tour, which starts daily at noon and 2pm, but that there is little time for taking photos.
