# Jonathan Harvey 1939-2012

I just learned that the British composer Jonathan Harvey passed away at the age of 73\. I only discovered his work some two years ago, but he has since become one of my favourite composers. I particularly like his later string quartets, his work for cello, and his last cd, [*Speakings*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N033R4cpogE&ref=ivarhagendoorn.com). One of his most famous compositions is the beautiful, haunting, angelic [*Mortuos Pango, Vivos Vico*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T-H-fVlHE0&ref=ivarhagendoorn.com) (1980), based on the sounds of a boy soprano and the great bells of Winchester Cathedral. To appreciate the dynamic range of his work you need a good sound system though or attend a concert, of course.
