Julian Barnes' *Levels of Life* reminded me of [this portrait of Sarah Bernhardt](http://t.co/cByMn4fWtK?ref=ivarhagendoorn.com), which hangs in the Petit Palais. Georges Clairin has painted [another portrait of Sarah Bernhardt](http://t.co/lkCYd6hVHE?ref=ivarhagendoorn.com), which I possibly like even more. Without the face and the hands it would almost be an abstract painting. In other words, the figure emerges from a whirl of colours.
