# Frieze Art Fair 2017

I still have fond memories of the [first (and last) time](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/blog/2007/10/16/frieze-art-fair-2007) I visited the Frieze Art Fair, but at this year's edition there was little that stood out, to me at least, and the little that did stand out was by established artists. I don't intend this as an assessment of the current state of the contemporary art world. It probably says more about my own interests. Next time I'll visit both Frieze and Frieze Masters, the sister fair where more than 130 galleries showcase work made before 2000.

From a sociological point of view the Frieze Art Fair remains a fascinating spectacle. VIPs can use a shuttle service, sponsored by BMW, and use a private space, sponsored by Deutsche Bank. The fair's layout is a reflection of the power structure in the contemporary art world, with two of today's most successful galleries, Gagosian and Hauser & Wirth, right opposite the entrance.

I don't regret paying GBP 50 for the privilege of visiting the fair. After all, I did discover where my current interests lie.
