In 2014 I hiked along the [Aletschgletscher](www.ivarhagendoorn.com/aletschgletscher/) from Bergstation Bettmerhorn to Märjelensee. In the distance I could see some tiny spots moving on the glacier. I thus assumed that it would be possible to do a guided glacier hike. This year I finally booked a guided tour on the glacier. As you can see I was very lucky with the weather. It was absolutely spectacular and way surpassed my expectations. It's only when you're on the glacier that you realize how big it really is. I now want to do the two-day tour from Jungfraujoch to Märjelensee with an overnight stay at the Konkordia hut. In 2025 I hiked the [UNESCO Höhenweg](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/unesco-hohenweg-bettmerhorn-eggishorn/) from Bettmerhorn to Eggishorn, a ridge trail which offers spectacular views of the Aletsch glacier and the surrounding mountains.

The Aletschgletscher consists of hills and valleys that you cannot really see from above

To reach the middle of the glacier you have to cross an area with crevasses and rocks. These are the dark bands that you see [from above](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/unesco-hohenweg-bettmerhorn-eggishorn/).

The guide explained that the rocks tip towards the south because that's the part of the ice that melts first

I was surprised to find this lake of melt water on the glacier. It's a big lake by the way.

There are valleys and hills ON the glacier

A glacier hike is one of the closest things to being on another planet (not that I've been on another planet).

I can't wait to go back when I look at these photos

And one more photo of the crevasses
