# Carrara Marble Quarry

The Carrara Marble Quarries, in the Apuan Alps near the town of Carrara in Tuscany, Italy, have been mined since at least Roman times. The marble from Carrara was used for numerous notable buildings, from the Pantheon in Rome to London's Marble Arch and the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in [Abu Dhabi](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/abu-dhabi/). It was also used in countless sculptures including Michelangelo's *David* (1501-04). I did two guided tours: one took me inside one of the mountains where marble is extracted, the other took me to the top of one of the mountains.
