Córdoba

Córdoba was an important Roman city and in the Middle Ages became a major Islamic centre and Europe's most cultured city. Córdoba is best known for La Mezquita, a large mosque dating from 784, which was converted into a Catholic church in 1236, following the reconquista. In the 17th century a Renaissance-style nave was added to the building. It is a truly unique work of architecture. I enjoyed exploring the winding alleys of medieval Córdoba and discovering the quaint little hidden plazas referred to in my travel guide.
