Greenland Ice Sheet

For years Greenland has been at the top of my bucket list. It's a privilege to finally have been able to visit Greenland, or rather a couple of destinations, because of course Greenland is huge. I had booked a guided tour from Kangerlussuaq with an overnight stay on the Greenland Ice Sheet. Unfortunately after we had set up camp we discovered fresh tracks of a polar bear. After consultation with local guides whom our own guide had alerted we had to break up camp and leave as soon as possible. And so the adventure became a little more adventurous. The next day local authorities sent out a helicopter to try and find the polar bear. Since polar bears are not native to the area around Kangerlussuaq it must have been lost and hungry and therefore potentially dangerous.

The edge of the ice sheet is a fascinating landscape of ice with mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes and deep abysses. One day I hope to return to spend a night on the ice and venture deeper onto the ice sheet.
