# Porto

I first visited Porto in 2005\. When I read that for a few weeks only there would be guided tours of the still empty [Casa da Musica](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/casa-da-musica/) before the official opening, I jumped on the occasion. Unfortunately, there were severe wildfires in the area surrounding Porto and I ended up with a throat ache and a slight fever. Even so, I had a great time. So when, a few years later, I was invited to give a lecture at a conference at the Casa da Musica I immediately said yes. I also enjoyed visiting the [Serralves Museum](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/serralves-museum/) by Alvaro Siza.

The old town of Porto is highly photogenic

There are many bridges across the Douro in Porto. This one, designed by Gustav Eiffel, is the most famous. When I was there in 2005 the bridge was being renovated. I'm glad to have been able to see it in all its glory and walk on top of it when I visited Porto again in 2008.
