In 2017 another long-held dream came true when I had a chance to visit the Walcott Quarry in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, the most famous quarry of the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale. The Burgess Shale is famous for its exquisitely preserved fossils, which reveal the extraordinary diversity of life forms that existed during the Cambrian and which include animals within bizarre anatomical features. I didn't know that it was possible to visit the site, but when I found out I instantly booked a guided tour. I didn't find any spectacular fossils, but I was more than happy to find some trilobites.

Countless fossils may be contained within these layers of rock...

...and the only way to find out...

...is to break it. You can't do an X-ray or MRI.

The hike to the Walcott Quarry offers nice views of the Rocky Mountains
