# Zermatt

Zermatt is one of my favorite destinations in Switzerland. It lies at the foot of some of the most magnificent mountains in the Alps. There are many excellent hiking and mountain trails in the area around Zermatt. I still haven't done them all. It's easy to reach by train; if you want to go to the neighbouring valleys of Saas-Fee, Zinal or Arolla, you have to take a bus, which is also fine — I've done it several times — but I find the train just a little bit more comfortable. Zermatt itself is a nice town with many great hotels, restaurants and shops. Some may find Zermatt a bit too touristy, but that also means that there are good facilities. The prime attractions in Zermatt are, of course, the [Matterhorn](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/matterhorn-glacier-trail/) and the [Gornergletscher](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/gornergletscher-revisited/). There are several huts, which make for a nice destination, such as the [Schönbielhütte](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/schonbielhutte/) and the [Hörnlihütte](https://www.ivarhagendoorn.com/photos/hornlihutte/).
