Daniel Yergin: The Prize. The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power
I know that I'm late to the party, but this is an excellent book and required reading if you want to understand 20th and 21st century history.
Rem Koolhaas on Architecture in the Age of Globalisation
Fascinating lecture by Rem Koolhaas as part of the Areen Architecture Series at the Department of Architecture and Design at the American University of Beirut, 17 May 2010. Koolhaas talks about the changing face of architecture and the changing role of the architect in the age of globalisation. Architecture used to reflect the values of a society, now it expresses the aspirations of the architect. Interesting throughout and not without self-criticism.
Here's another lecture by Rem Koolhaas, at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, 19 June 2009.
And another lecture, in French, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, October 2009.
