The MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst is located in a historic grain mill on the Duisburg harbour front that was originally converted into a museum by Herzog & de Meuron in 1999. Herzog & de Meuron have now created an extension to the museum, which adds about 2,500 square metres of exhibition space. The Museum Küppersmühle is best known for its staircase. The extension has added another staircase that rivals the original. Herzog and de Meuron's initial design for the extension, which envisioned an illuminated cube balanced on the silo towers, was truly spectacular, but too expensive. The Museum Küppersmühle has some great works by Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter in its collection.
