The Bisti Badlands is an expanse of unique rock formations in the desolate northwest corner of New Mexico, about 40 miles south of Farmington. Some 70 million years ago the area that includes the Bisti Badlands was a river delta that lay to the west of the shore of an ancient sea. Various dinosaur fossils have been discovered in the area. Due to its remote location the Bisti Badlands are still little visited. It was very hot when I visited and after walking around for two hours I called it a day.

I had the area almost entirely to myself, possibly because no one else was stupid enough to venture out in the desert on a day with temperatures approaching 40ºC (104ºF). Another photographer had set up camp at the parking lot to be there at daybreak the next morning.
