The Centro Niemeyer aka the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre in Avilés, Spain is one of the last projects designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012). The centre is located on the harbour front in the town of Avilés in northwest Spain not far from Oviedo. I visited the Centro Niemeyer in 2012, a year after the official opening, when Spain was still in the depths of recession following the financial crisis. It is well worth a detour if you're travelling to the north of Spain. Be sure to also spend some time in the old town of Avilés.
