According to my guidebook the hike across the Gemmi Pass is a classic. Indeed, it’s referred to as a classic among the classics. It goes without saying that I didn’t want to miss out on such a hike and to walk in the footsteps of Mark Twain. I took the bus from Kandersteg to the cable car station, which saves about half an hour walking. It had been cloudy in the valley and I’d been hoping that once up at Sunnbüel at 1936 meters it would be clear. However, it wasn’t until I reached the Gemmi Lodge that the clouds cleared. It's a nice hike, though not as spectacular as some of the other hikes I've done. The Lämmerenboden and Lämmerensee valley is quite beautiful. It was also interesting on this day to see the clouds come in from Berner Oberland and dissolve on the Wallis side above Leukerbad.

I hiked the Lämmern glacier trail all the way to Lämmerensee. I didn't have time to climb to the Lämmeren hut, because I didn't want to miss the last cable car back down to Kandersteg.

In the distance the Wildstrubelgletscher.
