Let me start by saying that, unfortunately, I didn't make it all the way to the Schreckhornhütte. According to my guide book it's an 8-hour hike. In my experience I should add at least one hour for photo stops. In high season the first cable car from Grindelwald to Pfingstegg is at 8:30 am and the last cable car down is at 7 pm. But in low season the first cable car up is at 9 am and the last cable car down is at 6 pm. During high season I could have made it back in time, but low season had just started. Even though I did have the first cable car up I didn't want to risk missing the last cable car down. So I decided to turn back when I reached the ladder section. Of course, I could have walked back down to the village, but that adds another 45-60 minutes to the hike. I'd love to give it another try during high season or perhaps stay overnight at the Schreckhornhütte. The views must be amazing. But even the hike up to the ladder section is pretty awesome.
