Due to landslides caused by the extreme weather of 21 June 2024 the trail to Trift is currently closed. I had originally planned to hike to the new Rothornhütte, but since I didn't know how long the alternative route would take I decided to hike the Wisshornweg instead, which is part of the new trail to Trift. Had I made an early start to the day I could easily have made it to the hut and back. The Wisshornweg makes for a great hike in its own right. There are no cable cars this side of the valley, so it's a lot more quiet than the other side(s) of Zermatt.

The Wisshornweg, or rather, a small section of the trail.
But the highlight are the views of the Ober Gabelhorn and the Wellenkuppe. The clouds provided a nice play of light and shadows.
Close-up of the Wellenkuppe
The views are absolutely stunning
It was a beautiful day and I still had some spare time so I decided to head for the glacier moraine.
The trail to the Rothornhütte from the glacier moraine. Unfortunately It was already too late in the afternoon to make it to the hut and back to Zermatt. From here it's about an hour or an hour and a half including photo stops to the hut. Add another hour for the descent to make it back to this same spot.
Wellenkuppe
The Wellenkuppe
In the distance the Rothornhütte. So close yet so far away. It's at the end/top of the ridge on the right, near the top right corner of the photo.
Time to head back to Zermatt. From here it's about two and a half hours to the Bahnhof. No rain had been forecast, but I didn't want to take any chances.
One last shot because it is so f*cking awesome
