Basel in northwestern Switzerland on the river Rhine is Switzerland's third most populous city (after Zürich and Geneva). A surprisingly large number of multinationals are headquartered in Basel, including Novartis, Syngenta, Ciba Specialty Chemicals and Hoffmann-La Roche. Basel is also the location of the Bank for International Settlements. As a consequence Basel is an affluent city, which shows in the number of art museums: the Fondation Beyeler, the Schaulager, the Tinguely Museum, the Kunsthalle Basel and the Kunstmuseum Basel to name but a few. Every June Basel is home to one of the most important contemporary art fairs, Art Basel. And of course there are some interesting works of modern architecture in and around Basel, including the Vitra Campus. Enough reasons to visit Basel, therefore.
