The Midway-Sunset Oil Field in Kern County, California is the largest known oil field in California and one of the largest in the United States. The field was discovered in 1894 and has produced more than 3 billion barrels of oil. I grew up close to an oil field and the sight of nodding donkeys has always had a special significance to me, bringing back childhood memories.
