Our Daily Bread
"Our Daily Bread" is a brilliant documentary about the food industry. The film is entirely without commentary. All you hear are the sounds recorded during the filming. It is hard to imagine what a voiceover could have added. The images make any commentary superfluous.
The Best Albums of 2006
An excellent year in music with some great debut albums.
Guangzhou
Guangzhou is the capital and most populous city of the province of Guangdong in southern China. In November 2006 I made a short day trip to Guangzhou to see the transformations going on in the city.
Shenzhen
A selection of photos taken around the centre of Shenzhen. Shenzhen is huge and these photos only offer a glimpse of this fast growing megacity.
Politics and Econometrics Don't Match
Politicians want numbers plain and simple. Econometricians do produce such numbers, but always with a confidence (or uncertainty) interval.
Spectacular City. Photographing the Future
There are some spectacular photos at the exhibition "Spectacular City. Photographing the Future" at the Netherlands Architecture Institute, but as a showcase of the city or urban photography it falls short.
Three Times
I was deeply moved by all three chapters in "Three Times" by director Hou Hsia Hsien. It is such a beautiful film.
Musée du Quai Branly
The Musée du Quai Branly is BIG and like the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay it is probably best to visit it twice rather than trying to see everything on one visit. After Africa and Oceania I was too saturated to take in much of Asia and the Americas.
OMA In The Hague
Although the exhibition looks a bit like Content-light it is an excellent survey of the numerous projects OMA has designed and proposed over the past 25 years in The Hague.
Daido Moriyama at FOAM
Daido Moriyama's photos of the 60s and 70s kick ass.
Architecture and Urban Planning in China. A Lecture By Rem Koolhaas
As part of the China Contemporary exhibition the Netherlands Architecture Institute organized a series of events, which included a lecture by Rem Koolhaas. It was a very interesting lecture.
